Turkiye-Israel war of words escalates over Gaza flotilla case

Tensions between Turkey and Israel have intensified following a sharp exchange of statements over legal action related to the 2025 Gaza flotilla incident.
Turkiye’s Foreign Ministry strongly criticised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, referring to him as the “Hitler of our times” after Israeli officials condemned a Turkish indictment against Israel’s political and military leadership. The indictment stems from the naval interception of the “Global Sumud Flotilla,” which was carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza in October 2025.
According to Turkish authorities, prosecutors in Istanbul have filed charges against 35 individuals, including Netanyahu, seeking severe penalties that could amount to thousands of years in prison. The charges include crimes such as genocide, crimes against humanity, torture, and unlawful detention.
The Turkish statement also referenced an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court in November 2024 against Netanyahu over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. Ankara accused the Israeli leader of attempting to derail ongoing peace negotiations and pursuing expansionist policies in the region.
In response, Netanyahu rejected the accusations and criticised Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, accusing him of supporting hostile groups and engaging in anti-Israel rhetoric. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz also dismissed the Turkish legal move as politically motivated, calling it a “sham trial.”
The incident at the centre of the dispute involved Israeli naval forces intercepting the flotilla in international waters. Activists on board, including prominent figures such as Greta Thunberg, were detained before being taken to Israel, an action widely criticised by organisers as unlawful.
The escalating rhetoric highlights deepening divisions between the two countries, further complicating regional diplomacy amid ongoing conflicts and fragile ceasefire efforts in the Middle East.
