Fresh controversy has emerged over the election process in India’s state of West Bengal, where critics have accused the government led by Narendra Modi of benefiting from alleged large-scale electoral irregularities.

According to reports published by The Wire, opposition voices and political observers have questioned the transparency of the voter registration process in West Bengal. The report claimed that nearly 10 million names were removed from voter lists, potentially preventing a large number of citizens from casting their votes.

The publication further alleged that around 2.7 million voters were excluded from the electoral rolls due to discrepancies in records. It also highlighted concerns over the addition of approximately 600,000 new voters after the release of the final electoral list, raising questions among critics regarding the fairness of the process.

The report linked the controversy to broader political tensions in India and alleged that the ruling party was attempting to strengthen its influence through aggressive political strategies. It also referred to remarks attributed to Suvendu Adhikari regarding the treatment of Muslims, comments that sparked criticism from rights groups and political opponents.

In addition, statements made in the past by senior Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, including Yogi Adityanath and Himanta Biswa Sarma, were cited by critics as examples of increasingly polarised political rhetoric in the country.

Political analysts say the allegations have intensified debate over democratic practices, minority rights and electoral accountability in India. Supporters of the government, however, reject claims of manipulation and maintain that the electoral process remains lawful and transparent under the supervision of Indian authorities.
