A young doctor, Dr Sarang Memon, was shot dead in a suspected targeted attack near the Mehran Hotel on Monday night, police confirmed on Tuesday.

According to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Syed Asad Raza, the victim was travelling in a rickshaw with his wife—also a doctor—on Stadium Road when armed suspects intercepted them near Dr Dawood Pota Road. The attackers, who were reportedly in a car, opened fire multiple times before fleeing the scene.

Dr Memon sustained four bullet wounds and was rushed to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre at around 11:30pm. Hospital officials confirmed that one bullet to the chest proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead during treatment.

Police said initial investigations suggest the killing was not linked to robbery. Instead, officials described it as a case of “personal enmity,” although inquiries are still ongoing. Crime Scene Unit teams collected forensic evidence, and CCTV footage from surrounding areas is being reviewed to identify the attackers.

The deceased was working at a private hospital in Gulistan-i-Jauhar and originally belonged to Badin district. His family has a history of multiple tragedies, including the drowning of one brother and the killing of another in a separate incident in Badin after the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

The incident adds to a troubling pattern of violence against medical professionals in Pakistan. Earlier cases include attacks on doctors in Peshawar, Wana, and Kohat, where several healthcare workers were either injured or killed in targeted shootings in recent months.

Authorities have pledged to investigate the killing from all possible angles and ensure the arrest of those responsible. The medical community has expressed concern over the rising insecurity faced by doctors, particularly during travel between workplaces and residences.
