The year 2025 is shaping up to be a landmark year for space exploration, with a series of high-profile space missions that could significantly alter the future of space travel. From China’s asteroid retrieval to the debut of the first-ever private space station, the coming months promise exciting developments.

⇒China’s asteroid retrieval mission

One of the most anticipated missions of the year is China’s Tianwen-2 space mission, scheduled to launch in 2025. The space missions aim to sample the near-Earth asteroid Kamoʻoalewa (2016 HO3), a unique celestial body that scientists believe could be a fragment of the Moon. The Tianwen-2 spacecraft will anchor onto the asteroid to collect valuable samples, which could provide crucial insights into the Moon’s composition and the early solar system.

⇒Exploring the lunar surface

In addition to China’s ambitious asteroid mission, NASA is continuing its exploration of the Moon. Building on the success of the Odysseus Moon landing in 2024, NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative will carry out several space missions throughout 2025. CLPS will deliver commercial lunar landers from companies like Astrobotic, Intuitive Machines, and Firefly Aerospace, each with distinct objectives ranging from scientific experiments to site-specific exploration.

The CLPS initiative is part of NASA’s broader goal of establishing a sustainable human presence on the Moon, with each space mission contributing to our understanding of the lunar environment. The success of these efforts marks a new chapter in lunar exploration, following the first U.S. Moon landing since 1972 in February 2024.

⇒Launch of the private space station
As plans to retire the International Space Station (ISS) unfold, the world is preparing for the arrival of the first commercial crewed space station. Scheduled to launch no earlier than August 2025, Haven-1 by private company Vast will be a game-changer in space habitation. With sleek designs resembling a luxury hotel, Haven-1 promises to offer more than just scientific research space—it will feature private rooms, a gym, and entertainment options for astronauts. The station will be a major step forward in the commercialisation of space, providing new opportunities for research, business, and even tourism in low Earth orbit.

⇒ESA’s space rider spaceplane

The European Space Agency (ESA) is also set to make strides in reusable space technology with the launch of its Space Rider spaceplane. Planned for an orbital test flight in the third quarter of 2025, Space Rider is designed to conduct scientific experiments in low Earth orbit. One key focus will be studying how plants and materials behave in microgravity. Additionally, Space Rider will test technologies that will be vital for future missions to the Moon and Mars, including advanced telecommunication systems that will allow for long-distance communication with spacecraft and astronauts.

⇒SpaceX Starship test flights

Elon Musk’s SpaceX is also gearing up for a groundbreaking demonstration in 2025, which could revolutionise space travel. SpaceX will test its Starship spacecraft’s refuelling capabilities in low Earth orbit, with a pair of Starships launching within weeks of each other. The second Starship will serve as a refuelling tanker for the first, a critical step toward long-duration missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

The test, slated for March 2025, is expected to provide vital data for future space missions that rely on in-orbit refuelling, a capability essential for deep-space exploration. This mission underscores SpaceX’s commitment to advancing space travel and opening the door to more ambitious endeavours.

⇒Looking ahead

With such a dynamic and diverse range of space missions on the horizon, 2025 is poised to be one of the most thrilling years in the history of space exploration. From groundbreaking private space stations to lunar exploration and asteroid sampling, the year promises to be a defining moment for humanity’s reach into the cosmos. As these space missions unfold, the future of space exploration looks brighter than ever.
