Ukraine Scrambles to React to U.S. War-End Proposal

Ukraine rushed to respond to a new U.S. peace plan that includes major Russian demands. The proposal forces Ukraine to give up land, limit its army and abandon NATO hopes. President Volodymyr Zelensky pushed back against these terms. Yet Russian leader Vladimir Putin welcomed the plan. The situation created new tensions among Kyiv, Washington and Europe.
Kyiv quickly contacted key European allies for support. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha spoke with officials from France, Britain and the EU. European leaders stressed that no deal should exclude Ukraine. British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper insisted Ukraine must choose its own future. Their statements showed strong concern over Washington’s approach. Europe plans further talks at the G20 summit in South Africa.
Zelensky said he would not accept any deal that betrays Ukraine’s interests. He promised to propose alternatives to the U.S. plan. Trump gave Ukraine less than a week to approve the proposal. However, Zelensky warned that Ukraine risks losing the United States as an ally. The pressure created one of the hardest moments for Ukraine since the invasion.
Putin praised the U.S. plan and threatened more land grabs if Kyiv rejected it. He claimed Russia could repeat recent advances along the front line. Ukraine denied Russia had retaken the city of Kupiansk. Zelensky reminded citizens of Ukraine’s resolve during the first days of the war. He vowed to defend national dignity while seeking a fair solution. His team also spoke with leaders from Germany, France and Britain.
Meanwhile, Russia intensified deadly attacks across Ukraine. A missile strike in Ternopil killed at least 32 people and damaged homes. The assault came as Russia targeted Ukraine’s energy grid before winter. The U.S. plan demands Ukraine accept Russian control of occupied areas and limit its forces to 600,000 troops. It also bars NATO membership and foreign troops. Zelensky said Ukraine now faces a painful choice between dignity and losing a key partner.
