Ireland Tightens Immigration Rules

Ireland has introduced new measures to tighten immigration rules in response to rising population growth. Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan stated that the government is concerned about the “worryingly” high rate of population growth. The new policies aim to manage the increasing number of asylum seekers and migrants entering the country. These changes include tougher rules on family reunification and citizenship applications for refugees.

The new measures will require asylum seekers who are employed to contribute to state accommodation costs. Additionally, individuals seeking to bring family members from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) will need to prove they earn at least 44,000 euros annually. They must also have adequate accommodation for their family. This is part of a broader effort to ensure that immigration remains manageable.

Ireland’s net migration has almost doubled since 2022, with an average of 72,000 people arriving each year. The finance ministry attributes the rise to high demand for employment permits, family reunification, and an influx of Ukrainian refugees. The country’s population increased by 1.6% last year, seven times the EU average, which prompted the government to take action.

The new immigration rules also include changes to citizenship eligibility. Refugees can now apply for citizenship only after five years of residency, up from three years. Additionally, those receiving long-term social welfare benefits will be ineligible for citizenship. These measures are intended to slow the rate of population growth while still recognizing the valuable contributions of immigrants to Irish society.

The government has already taken steps to speed up immigration application processes. O’Callaghan stated that processing times will be reduced to three to six months by June 2026. While the government values immigration, these new rules aim to balance the country’s growing population with available resources and public services.

According to Ireland’s state broadcaster, the decision came after hours of cabinet-level discussions. Officials said that competing alongside Israel, while thousands of lives are being lost in Gaza and the humanitarian crisis continues, would be morally unacceptable.

The decision will now be forwarded to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which oversees Eurovision. The issue of Israel’s participation was already raised during the EBU’s General Assembly meeting in July.
