Pakistan’s national space agency, SUPARCO, has issued an El Nino alert after observing above-normal sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, indicating that the climate phenomenon has become active and may influence weather conditions across the region.

According to the agency, the development could have significant implications for Pakistan’s weather patterns during the upcoming monsoon season as well as the winter months. Experts warn that changes associated with El Nino often alter rainfall distribution, temperature trends and the frequency of extreme weather events.

SUPARCO noted that the warming of Pacific waters may lead to weaker-than-normal monsoon rainfall in Pakistan. Reduced precipitation could place additional pressure on water resources, agriculture and reservoir levels, particularly in areas already facing water shortages.

The agency also highlighted the possibility of above-average temperatures during the winter season. Warmer conditions may affect crop cycles, water availability and overall environmental conditions across different regions of the country.

Climate experts have further cautioned that El Nino can contribute to an increased likelihood of heatwaves during spring and summer. Higher temperatures can impact public health, energy demand and agricultural productivity, making preparedness measures essential for both authorities and communities.

Beyond Pakistan, the phenomenon is expected to influence weather systems in several parts of the world. Dry conditions and drought risks may increase across parts of South Asia, Australia and some African regions, while heavier rainfall is forecast for parts of South America and East Africa.

Officials have advised relevant departments, including those responsible for agriculture, water management and disaster preparedness, to closely monitor evolving conditions and plan accordingly. Continued observation of ocean temperatures and atmospheric indicators will help scientists assess the strength and duration of El Nino and its potential impact on Pakistan in the months ahead.
