A report published by Modern Diplomacy has supported Pakistan’s long-standing concerns regarding the presence of militant groups in Afghanistan, warning that the situation poses a serious threat to regional security.

According to the publication, multiple militant organisations are currently operating inside Afghanistan particularly in eastern provinces bordering Pakistan, including Kunar and Nangarhar. The report highlights that these areas have become key hubs for groups involved in cross-border activities.

The analysis claims that more than 20 regional and international militant organisations, including Al-Qaeda, remain active in Afghanistan. It further notes that the security environment has deteriorated since August 2021, when the Afghan Taliban took control, with allegations that armed groups have been able to operate more freely.

Experts cited in the report suggest that Afghanistan is increasingly being used as a safe base for planning and launching operations, raising alarms for neighbouring countries. Pakistan, in particular, is seen as directly affected due to its geographical proximity and past incidents of cross-border militancy.

The report also points to broader concerns, including alleged human rights violations and rigid governance policies, which have contributed to Afghanistan’s growing international isolation. Analysts argue that these factors, combined with the presence of militant networks, are undermining efforts to achieve long-term stability in the region.

While the Afghan authorities have repeatedly denied allowing their territory to be used for militant activities, international observers continue to call for stronger measures to address these concerns.
