Electricity consumers in Pakistan may face a slight increase in power tariffs as part of the monthly fuel cost adjustment for March. The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) seeking approval for a hike of 26 paisa per unit.

Nepra is scheduled to conduct a hearing on the petition on April 28, after which a final decision will be announced. If approved, the increase will apply to consumers across the country, including those served by K-Electric.

According to CPPA data, a total of 8.939 billion units of electricity were generated during March, out of which 8.644 billion units were supplied to distribution companies. The reference fuel cost for the month was set at Rs7.99 per unit.

The power generation mix indicates a diversified energy base. Hydel sources contributed the largest share at 23.55%, followed by nuclear energy at 21.95%. Local coal accounted for 16.76% of total generation, while imported coal contributed 13.80%.

Electricity produced from local gas made up 11.34%, while imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) contributed 5.64%. Furnace oil had a minimal share of 1.02% in the overall energy mix.

Renewable energy sources also played a role in power generation during the month. Wind energy contributed 3.46%, while solar power accounted for 1.18% of the total electricity produced.

Officials noted that fluctuations in global fuel prices and the cost of power generation directly impact monthly adjustments. The proposed increase, though modest, reflects these changing dynamics.

If approved, the adjustment will add to consumers’ electricity bills, highlighting the continued pressure on energy costs despite efforts to stabilise the sector.
