Pakistan has emerged as a key diplomatic player during ongoing Iran–United States talks, with recent developments highlighting Islamabad’s growing role on the global stage while raising questions about India’s positioning in international affairs.

According to a report by The Atlantic, India’s long-standing ambition to position itself as a leading global power has faced a setback amid the evolving Middle East crisis. The report noted that New Delhi’s influence appeared limited as Pakistan hosted the first round of talks between Washington and Tehran in Islamabad.

Although the initial negotiations concluded without a formal agreement, Pakistan’s role as a facilitator has been widely acknowledged. Islamabad continues to push for a second round of negotiations, aiming to maintain the fragile ceasefire and move towards a broader diplomatic settlement.

The report also pointed out that internal political dynamics and media control in India may have affected its global image, reducing its ability to assert leadership during a complex international crisis. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement has positioned it as a credible intermediary capable of engaging with multiple stakeholders.

Narendra Modi has for years sought to present India as a leader of the Global South, promoting the country as an indispensable actor in world affairs. However, the current regional tensions and economic pressures have challenged that narrative, particularly as Islamabad has taken a more visible role in conflict mediation.

Following the April 8 ceasefire, criticism has reportedly grown within Indian political circles, with opposition figures questioning the effectiveness of the government’s foreign policy approach.

Despite the lack of a breakthrough in the first round, Pakistan has reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating dialogue between Iran and the United States. A second round of talks is expected soon, with cautious optimism surrounding potential progress toward de-escalation and regional stability.
