Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has suffered a major political setback after two former prime ministers announced the formation of a new electoral alliance aimed at challenging his government.

Former premiers Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid revealed that they are merging their political parties to create a unified front ahead of the upcoming general elections scheduled for October 2026.

According to their announcement, the primary objective of this alliance is to defeat Netanyahu’s coalition government, which has faced growing criticism in recent years over its policies and leadership style. The move is being seen as a significant development in Israeli politics, potentially reshaping the electoral landscape.

Naftali Bennett stated that the newly formed party will be called “Together” and confirmed that he will lead the alliance. He emphasised that after nearly three decades of Netanyahu’s dominance in Israeli politics, the time has come for change.

“After 30 years, it is time to part ways with Netanyahu. Israel must change its direction,” Bennett said while addressing supporters.

Political analysts believe that the alliance between Bennett and Lapid could consolidate opposition votes and pose a serious challenge to Netanyahu’s chances of retaining power. However, the success of the alliance will depend on its ability to unite diverse voter groups and present a strong alternative vision for the country.

The upcoming elections are expected to be highly competitive, with this new alliance likely to play a crucial role in determining the future political direction of Israel.
