Karachi’s food scene is witnessing a major shift as live Korean barbecue gains popularity among diners who once dismissed the concept as a short-lived trend. Restaurants offering tabletop grilling experiences are now attracting packed crowds, signaling a growing appetite for interactive East Asian dining experiences in the city.

One of the key names behind this transformation is Banchan, a restaurant that quietly introduced Korean BBQ near the popular BBQ Tonight area. Unlike earlier attempts by eateries that relied mainly on social media hype and Korean drama-inspired curiosity, Banchan focused on consistency, service and authenticity.

The restaurant’s live grilling concept allows customers to cook marinated meat directly at their tables while enjoying a variety of traditional Korean side dishes, including kimchi, pickled vegetables and dipping sauces. Diners who were initially hesitant about “paying to cook their own food” gradually embraced the experience due to the restaurant’s quality and attentive service.

The growing success of Korean BBQ has also encouraged new entrants into Karachi’s dining market. KaoRou recently introduced a North Chinese-style live barbecue experience in DHA Phase VI. While similar in concept, KaoRou offers a different flavor profile with cumin-heavy marinades, customizable dipping sauces and a more spacious dining setup.

Food enthusiasts say the popularity of live barbecue reflects changing dining habits among Karachi residents, especially younger consumers seeking immersive food experiences. The trend has also been influenced by the global rise of Korean pop culture and increased exposure to East Asian cuisine.

Restaurant owners believe the demand for live BBQ experiences is likely to grow further as customers become more open to trying unfamiliar cuisines. With both Korean and Chinese-inspired barbecue concepts finding loyal audiences, Karachi’s evolving food culture appears ready for more international dining experiments.
