Apple refuses cyber safety app India’s

The Indian government has ordered smartphone makers to preload a state-owned cyber safety app called Sanchar Saathi within 90 days. However, Apple plans to reject the directive due to privacy and security concerns. Officials say the app helps track stolen phones and blocks misuse, but critics warn it could enable government surveillance.

Apple will privately inform New Delhi that it does not follow such mandates anywhere in the world. The company believes the order threatens the security of its iOS ecosystem. Meanwhile, the telecom ministry defends the move as a key step to reduce cybercrime. Lawmakers from the opposition criticized the decision in Parliament and demanded its withdrawal.

The government says the app will combat phone theft, spoofed IMEI numbers, and scams. It also argues that India’s large second-hand phone market requires tighter controls. However, privacy advocates insist the mandate creates a “snooping tool” that could allow state overreach.

Other smartphone makers, including Samsung and Xiaomi, are reviewing the order. Apple, which tightly controls its App Store, says the requirement would create serious vulnerabilities. Industry sources claim the rule was introduced without consultation.

The move comes as Apple faces a separate court dispute over an antitrust case in India. Despite tensions, Apple is not expected to take legal action but remains firm that it cannot comply with the directive.

Saudi Arabia’s national airline, Saudia, has introduced Apple’s Find My Share Item Location feature to help passengers track lost baggage. This service will especially benefit travelers from Pakistan who frequently fly to Saudi Arabia for Hajj, Umrah, business, or family visits. The feature allows passengers to share their luggage’s location through Apple’s Find My app directly via Saudia’s digital portal.

Once passengers receive their baggage, location sharing ends automatically. They can also choose to stop sharing at any time. If not manually stopped, the feature expires after seven days. This step is part of Saudia’s plan to enhance passenger comfort through modern, secure, and digital services.
