Arab states urge Iran to withdraw Hormuz rules

Six Arab countries have jointly urged United Nations to press Iran to withdraw what they described as unilateral regulations imposed in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

According to reports, a formal letter was sent to UN Secretary-General by Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Jordan expressing concern over Iran’s recent actions in the vital maritime passage.

The countries stated in the letter that no state has the authority to impose unilateral laws or restrictions affecting international waterways. They stressed that the Strait of Hormuz is a globally significant shipping route and must remain open and accessible under international law.

The Arab nations also presented six demands in their communication to the United Nations. These included calls for Iran to withdraw its administrative claims over the strait, reopen the waterway without conditions and provide compensation for damages caused by disruptions linked to the ongoing tensions.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important energy transit routes, carrying a significant portion of global oil and gas exports. Rising tensions in the region have increased international concern over shipping security, energy supplies and the stability of global markets.

The letter comes amid heightened geopolitical uncertainty in the Gulf region and growing diplomatic efforts by regional and international powers to prevent further escalation. Several countries have warned that any restrictions or instability in the strait could severely impact global trade and energy prices.

So far, Iranian authorities have not publicly responded to the demands outlined in the letter submitted to the United Nations.
