Army Act Amendment Bill to Be Presented in Senate Today

The Army Act Amendment Bill will be presented in the Senate today by Defense Minister Khawaja Asif. The Senate agenda has been released, which also includes the presentation of the Pakistan Air Force Act Amendment Bill and the Pakistan Navy Ordinance Amendment Bill. These bills are being presented for approval after already being passed by the National Assembly.

Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar will also present the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Amendment Bill for approval in the same Senate session. These bills aim to update the legal and administrative framework for the armed forces and judiciary.

The National Assembly has already approved the Army Act 2025 following the 27th Constitutional Amendment. According to the Act, a new notification will be issued for the Army Chief as Chief of Defense Forces, and the tenure of the Army Chief will restart from the date of the new notification.

The Army Act also states that the Army Chief, as Chief of Defense Forces, will oversee restructuring and integration of all branches of the Pakistan Army. The Prime Minister, based on the Army Chief’s recommendation, will appoint the Commander of the National Strategic Command. The term for the Commander will be three years, with the possibility of reappointment for another three years.

The bill also specifies that, from November 27, the position of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee will be abolished. The Army Act Amendment Bill will be presented in the Senate today, marking a major step in the restructuring and modernization of Pakistan’s defense leadership.
