Artemis II mission return

The four astronauts of Artemis II are set to complete a historic journey as they return to Earth following the first crewed mission around the Moon in more than 50 years. Travelling aboard the Orion spacecraft, the crew is expected to splash down in the Pacific Ocean near Southern California.

The mission, led by NASA, includes astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen. The crew launched from Cape Canaveral on April 1 and travelled farther into space than any human mission before them, circling the far side of the Moon.

Their return involves a high-speed re-entry through Earth’s atmosphere, reaching speeds of over 40,000 kilometres per hour. During this phase, temperatures outside the capsule are expected to reach nearly 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit, testing the spacecraft’s heat shield under extreme conditions.

Artemis II mission accelerates new Moon race

The Artemis II mission marks a major milestone in modern space exploration, becoming the first human mission to approach the Moon since the Apollo program. It also carries historical significance, as Victor Glover becomes the first Black astronaut, Christina Koch the first woman, and Jeremy Hansen the first non-American to participate in a lunar mission.

The mission serves as a crucial step toward future lunar landings and long-term exploration goals, including human missions to Mars. Engineers have adjusted the spacecraft’s descent path based on lessons learned from earlier test flights to ensure a safer return.

If successful, the splashdown will mark the completion of a landmark mission, reinforcing global confidence in space exploration and technological advancement.
