Brazilian Supreme Court Sentences Former President Bolsonaro to Over 27 Years in Prison

Brazil’s Supreme Court has convicted former President Jair Bolsonaro of conspiring to overthrow the government, handing him a prison sentence of 27 years and 3 months.
The decision came from a five-judge panel, with four judges voting in favour of the conviction, while one dissented, voting to acquit Bolsonaro of all charges.
Bolsonaro, who is currently under house arrest, did not appear in court for the verdict. His legal team has announced plans to appeal the decision, requesting that a full bench of 11 Supreme Court justices hear the case.
International Reaction
U.S. President Donald Trump expressed disappointment over the ruling. Speaking to the media, he described the court’s decision as “unexpected”.
