The health condition of former first lady Bushra Bibi once again became a major point of contention in Pakistan’s Senate on Friday, as the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) demanded greater transparency over her medical treatment and access to her health records.

PTI senators raised concerns over reports that Bushra Bibi, who is currently in judicial custody at Adiala Jail, was taken to a hospital under tight security for medical examination and later returned to prison. The party alleged a lack of transparency, claiming that neither her legal team nor political representatives were informed about her treatment or allowed to meet her.

Senator Mishal Yousafzai said Bushra Bibi had been taken to the hospital “in the darkness of night,” and demanded that a parliamentary committee be formed to independently review her condition and ensure transparency. PTI also reiterated its call for access to her medical reports. Chairing the session, Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani allowed discussion on the matter amid growing tensions in the Upper House.

Responding on behalf of the government, Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry rejected the allegations, stating that all prisoners are treated strictly under established jail rules and legal procedures. He said medical care is provided to inmates whenever required, including during emergencies, and that no prisoner is denied treatment.

He emphasized that all medical procedures and custody decisions are properly documented and subject to official oversight. The minister further said that judicial custody matters cannot be influenced externally and that legal channels remain available if any party seeks additional relief. He cautioned against politicising issues related to prison management, stressing that the system is functioning under the law.

The session also saw other senators raise separate concerns over law and order in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, highlighting broader security challenges across the country.
