At least two people were killed and several others injured after a strong earthquake struck China’s southwestern Guangxi region, triggering panic and damaging buildings across the affected area.

According to Chinese state media, the earthquake measured 5.2 in magnitude and hit Liunan district in the city of Liuzhou. The quake occurred at a shallow depth of around eight kilometres, increasing the intensity of shaking felt by residents in nearby areas.

Authorities said at least 13 buildings collapsed following the tremor, while several homes and structures suffered partial damage. Rescue teams and emergency workers were immediately deployed to the affected region to search for survivors and assist injured residents.

Initial reports confirmed the deaths of two people, while at least four others sustained injuries. Officials also reported that one person remained missing as rescue operations continued.

Residents described scenes of panic as people rushed out of homes and workplaces after feeling strong tremors. Emergency services have cordoned off dangerous structures to prevent further casualties, while engineers are assessing the safety of damaged buildings.

Experts noted that shallow earthquakes often cause greater destruction because seismic waves reach the surface with more force, especially in densely populated urban areas. Authorities warned residents to remain cautious due to the possibility of aftershocks.

China frequently experiences earthquakes because of its location on major seismic fault lines. In recent years, several provinces have witnessed destructive tremors that caused significant damage and casualties.

Local authorities in Guangxi said relief efforts were ongoing and that medical assistance, temporary shelter and emergency supplies were being provided to affected families. Rescue workers continued efforts to locate the missing person trapped under debris.

The government has also launched an investigation into the structural safety of buildings in the affected district to prevent future risks during seismic activity.
