IBM lays off 8,000 employees amid shift to AI automation

Author Avatar Web Desk | 3 weeks ago
Tech giant IBM has laid off approximately 8,000 employees, primarily from its Human Resources (HR) department, as part of its transition to artificial intelligence (AI)-powered systems.

According to reports, at least 200 HR roles have already been replaced with AI agents capable of handling employee support, data management, and administrative tasks autonomously.

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna stated that AI and automation have significantly improved internal operations. Despite the layoffs, he emphasised that the company is still expanding its overall workforce — signalling a strategic balance between technology adoption and human capital.

This development follows a similar move by Google last month, which terminated hundreds of employees across teams working on Android, Pixel devices, and the Chrome browser.
