Indus water diversion warning

Pakistan’s Indus Waters Commissioner issued a strong warning on Thursday. He said diverting river water would be treated as an act of war.

Moreover, Commissioner Syed Muhammad Mehar Ali Shah addressed the situation in Islamabad. He stressed that Pakistan is closely watching all developments.

Meanwhile, he said authorities are monitoring water flows using satellite technology. This system helps detect any unusual changes in river patterns.

Additionally, he accused India of repeatedly violating the Indus Waters Treaty. He said such actions threaten regional stability and trust.

Furthermore, Shah said India has not shared details of its Chenab River project. Under the treaty, India must provide complete project information to Pakistan.

Pakistan is facing significant fluctuations in the Chenab River’s flow due to India’s actions at the Baglihar Dam. WAPDA data revealed a sharp increase and then sudden decrease in water levels, raising concerns over potential manipulation of the river’s flow.

On Tuesday, the Chenab saw a dramatic surge of 58,300 cusecs after India opened the spillways of the Baglihar Dam. However, within 24 hours, the river’s flow dropped sharply by 48,000 cusecs, causing alarm. Currently, the river is flowing at 10,100 cusecs, up from 7,000 cusecs on Monday, highlighting the drastic changes in water levels.
