Iran warns US over Strait of Hormuz operation as tensions escalate

Tensions between Iran and the United States have intensified after Tehran warned that any American interference in the Strait of Hormuz would be considered a violation of the existing ceasefire agreement. The warning came in response to US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a new maritime initiative aimed at escorting commercial vessels through the heavily restricted waterway.

Trump said the United States would begin “Project Freedom,” describing it as a humanitarian effort to assist stranded ships and their crews affected by the ongoing blockade. He stated that US forces would help guide vessels safely through the Strait of Hormuz, where hundreds of commercial ships have reportedly been impacted by restricted navigation and supply shortages.

According to Trump, the operation will involve guided-missile destroyers, more than 100 aircraft, unmanned platforms across multiple domains, and approximately 15,000 service members. He also said the initiative is intended to ensure the safe movement of ships until navigation conditions improve.

In response, a senior Iranian parliamentary security official warned that any US involvement in the maritime control of the strait would be viewed as a breach of the ceasefire agreement. Iran has maintained that its control over the waterway is linked to broader regional tensions following recent military confrontations involving the United States and Israel.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route, has effectively become a focal point of the conflict, with both sides imposing restrictions that have disrupted the flow of oil, gas, and other essential goods to international markets.

European countries have expressed concern over the prolonged closure, urging a diplomatic resolution. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called for the reopening of the strait while stressing that Iran must renounce nuclear weapons under any negotiated settlement.

Oil prices remain significantly elevated, about 50 percent higher than before the conflict, reflecting ongoing uncertainty in global energy markets. Analysts warn that continued disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could further strain global supply chains and increase energy costs worldwide.
