Israel Begins Major Ground Operation in Gaza City

Israel began a major ground assault on Gaza City early Tuesday, escalating its military campaign in the Palestinian territory. The attack followed a visit by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who supported Israel’s goals in Gaza. During the night, Israeli forces bombed the city heavily and pushed deeper into urban areas. A military official confirmed the army has entered the “main phase” of its Gaza City operation. He said forces are now operating in Hamas’s stronghold.

The military estimates thousands of Hamas fighters remain in the city. Officials say between 2,000 and 3,000 militants are still active in the area. Defence Minister Israel Katz declared Gaza City “on fire” as troops advanced. Residents described intense shelling and gunfire throughout the night. Ahmed Ghazal, a local resident, said, “We can hear their screams.” Much of the city is already in ruins from nearly two years of strikes.

International criticism of the assault is growing rapidly. Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called the renewed offensive “completely wrong.” He urged Israel to pursue a ceasefire and hostage deal instead. Wadephul said Berlin has clearly conveyed its stance to the Israeli government. Other international voices have echoed calls for restraint and peace talks. The situation on the ground, however, continues to deteriorate.

A United Nations investigation has accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. The report also charges Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other top leaders with incitement. These serious accusations further complicate Israel’s international standing. Human rights groups have repeatedly raised concerns over civilian casualties and large-scale destruction. The UN’s findings may increase pressure for accountability.

According to local health authorities, over 64,900 people have died in Gaza since the war began. Most of the victims are civilians, including women and children. The war started after Hamas attacks in October 2023. Since then, Israeli strikes have left Gaza’s infrastructure in collapse. As the offensive intensifies, humanitarian conditions worsen by the hour. The world continues to watch closely as the conflict escalates.
