Israel expands lebanon operations

Benjamin Netanyahu has announced plans to widen Israel’s military operations in southern Lebanon, citing continued rocket fire from Hezbollah despite ongoing efforts to stabilize the border.

In a video statement delivered from the Israeli Northern Command, Netanyahu said he had directed the military to extend the current security zone. The move is intended to reduce the threat posed by cross-border attacks and to push hostile activity further away from Israeli communities near the frontier.

Israel had already indicated last week that it was increasing its presence in areas stretching toward the Litani River, a key geographic marker roughly 30 kilometers north of the Israeli border. It remains unclear whether the latest directive involves expanding within that zone or moving beyond it.

Officials have not released detailed operational plans, and the proposal has yet to be formally reviewed by Israel’s security cabinet. However, Defence Minister Israel Katz previously stated that forces aim to secure strategic crossings and maintain control of critical areas up to the river.

The escalation comes amid continued violence in the region. Lebanese authorities report that over 1,100 people have been killed in recent Israeli strikes and ground operations, including civilians and medical workers. The figures do not differentiate between fighters and non-combatants.

On the Israeli side, the military has confirmed casualties among its troops during clashes in southern Lebanon.

Netanyahu emphasized that the broader objective is to strengthen national security and alter the long-term situation along Israel’s northern border. While he stated that much of the threat from missile stockpiles has been reduced, he acknowledged that Hezbollah retains some ability to launch attacks.

He also described the conflict as part of a wider regional confrontation involving Iran-backed groups, including Hamas in Gaza.
