LAHORE – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the establishment of Stroke Management Centres in all districts. The centres aim to provide timely and effective treatment for stroke patients. She emphasized the importance of rapid care during the “golden hours” after a stroke. The initiative will reduce travel burdens and improve survival rates across the province. Authorities plan to deploy neurologists and paediatric neurologists at all DHQ hospitals.

The chief minister ordered urgent training for medical staff, including one doctor and one nurse from each district. They will receive three months of specialised stroke management training. In addition, a nurses’ training programme will be launched for the new stroke centres. This effort ensures skilled personnel are available to handle stroke emergencies efficiently. Officials said training and awareness are critical to improving patient outcomes.

Maryam Nawaz also directed the immediate launch of a telemedicine project for stroke patients. District hospital doctors will receive instant guidance from specialists via telephone. This will allow quick decisions in emergencies and reduce treatment delays. The telemedicine service will connect rural hospitals with experienced consultants. Officials expect it to save lives and enhance care quality.

The chief minister stressed public awareness campaigns to educate citizens on stroke prevention and timely treatment. She will personally lead efforts to inform the public. Campaigns will highlight risk factors, warning signs, and the importance of urgent medical attention. Authorities hope that education will reduce stroke-related deaths and disabilities. They plan to engage communities through media, hospitals, and local health programmes.

Finally, Maryam Nawaz announced that stroke management centres will also be established in children’s hospitals across Punjab. No patient will need to travel to major cities for care. PIMS neurologist Dr Qasim Bashir briefed the chief minister, noting one in four people over 25 is at risk of stroke. He stressed training and awareness for pre-hospital, hospital, and post-hospital care are essential.
