Saudi-Israel Normalization

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) rejected President Donald Trump’s suggestion to join the Abraham Accords during a tense exchange. The meeting, held at the White House, saw Trump pressing MBS to normalize relations with Israel as part of the accords. However, MBS pushed back, arguing that normalization could not happen until the Palestinian statehood issue was addressed.

According to reports from Axios, the conversation turned heated when Trump raised the idea of Saudi Arabia joining the Abraham Accords. Trump emphasized the benefits of the deal, which involved Israel establishing ties with several Arab nations, including the UAE and Bahrain. MBS, however, made it clear that Saudi Arabia would not move forward without a clear path to Palestinian statehood.

The Crown Prince stated that any normalization with Israel would be contingent on resolving the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, particularly the situation in Gaza. He firmly rejected any agreement until there was significant progress on the Palestinian issue. This disagreement highlighted the differences in the leaders’ approaches to Middle East diplomacy.

The exchange also reflected broader regional tensions, especially with the ongoing war in Gaza. The Trump administration had been keen on expanding the Abraham Accords, which aimed to normalize relations between Israel and Arab nations. However, Saudi Arabia’s stance remained firmly linked to Palestinian statehood and the resolution of Gaza’s humanitarian crisis.

At the time of the meeting, the US and Saudi leadership were engaged in high-level talks, but this disagreement marked a significant challenge to Trump’s Middle East strategy. MBS’s firm position underscored the centrality of the Palestinian cause in Saudi foreign policy, despite increasing regional shifts toward cooperation with Israel.

A high-stakes meeting between US President Donald Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) turned tense last week. The two leaders disagreed over the timing of Saudi Arabia joining the Abraham Accords. Trump had hoped the post-Gaza war period would open the door for Saudi-Israeli normalization. Instead, sources revealed that Trump left the meeting “disappointed and angry.”

Trump had previously informed MBS that he expected tangible progress on normalization with Israel during their November 18 meeting. The White House stressed the importance of Saudi Arabia joining the Abraham Accords, a key foreign policy achievement from Trump’s first term. However, when the president raised the issue during their private conversation, the atmosphere became strained. MBS resisted the pressure, asserting that public opinion in Saudi Arabia was currently too hostile toward Israel due to the Gaza conflict.
