Pakistan Launches Independent Electricity Market System

Pakistan has officially launched a new independent electricity market system to transform the country’s power trading. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has granted a licence to the Independent System and Market Operator (ISMO), which will now take over from the Central Power Purchasing Agency.
This new system allows consumers to buy electricity directly from suppliers, moving away from traditional distribution companies. It is designed to improve efficiency and transparency and reduce the government’s role as the sole buyer of electricity.
The Independent System and Market Operator will be initially led by three directors, with plans to expand to eleven. Syed Zakariya Ali Shah will be the CEO, with Muhammad Fakhar Alam and Sajjad Haider as directors.
