Roshan Maeeshat Bijli Package

Islamabad,: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has unveiled the Roshan Maeeshat Bijli Package (Roshan Economy Power Package), aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s industrial and agricultural sectors by providing electricity at reduced rates for the next three years.

The announcement was made during a meeting with a delegation comprising representatives from the business community and experts from the industrial and agricultural sectors in Islamabad.

Under the new package, industries and farmers will receive additional electricity at a subsidized rate of Rs.22.98 per unit until October 2028. Currently, electricity costs stand at around Rs.34 per unit for industries and Rs.38 per unit for the agricultural sector. The prime minister noted that this reduction will ease production costs and encourage higher output across both sectors.

Commending Minister for Energy Owais Leghari and his team for their role in formulating the initiative, the prime minister said the government remains focused on enhancing competitiveness and improving the ease of doing business in Pakistan.

Highlighting the positive impact of the previous year’s electricity support scheme, the prime minister shared that industrial and agricultural consumers used an additional 410 gigawatts of power, which helped stimulate production, increase exports, and generate employment opportunities.

Shehbaz Sharif added that the transition from economic crisis to stability has been difficult but achievable through the efforts of the government’s economic team and cooperation from stakeholders. He expressed hope that sustained growth in industry and agriculture would help Pakistan reduce its dependence on external loans and move toward self-sufficiency.

Pakistan has officially launched a new independent electricity market system to transform the country’s power trading. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has granted a licence to the Independent System and Market Operator (ISMO), which will now take over from the Central Power Purchasing Agency.

This new system allows consumers to buy electricity directly from suppliers, moving away from traditional distribution companies. It is designed to improve efficiency and transparency and reduce the government’s role as the sole buyer of electricity.
