PM Shehbaz Sharif Orders Fast-Track EV Policy in Pakistan

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to accelerate efforts for the promotion of electric vehicles (EVs) across Pakistan, aiming to modernize transport and reduce fuel dependency.
A high-level meeting chaired by the Prime Minister reviewed ongoing initiatives to expand the use of electric vehicles nationwide. Officials provided a detailed briefing on current progress and future targets.
During the meeting, it was revealed that 72 manufacturing certificates have been issued for electric motorcycles and rickshaws, while four certificates have been granted for electric cars, indicating growing industrial participation.

Authorities also informed that 123 applications have been received for establishing EV charging stations across the country. The government plans to ensure wider accessibility of charging infrastructure in the coming years.
The long-term strategy includes a target to convert 30 percent of all vehicles in Pakistan to electric power within the next five years, marking a significant shift towards sustainable transportation.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that promoting electric vehicles will reduce the burden of fuel imports and contribute to environmental protection as well as national energy security.
He further instructed that subsidies for electric motorcycles aimed at low-income citizens must be implemented transparently, while ensuring faster execution of the EV policy for maximum public benefit.
