Portugal Announces Recognition of Palestine as a State

Lisbon: Portugal has officially decided to recognise Palestine as an independent state, with the formal announcement scheduled for September 21, the Foreign Ministry confirmed.

This decision places Portugal among the growing number of nations that have recently acknowledged Palestinian statehood. The move follows similar announcements by the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Canada, and several other countries.

Earlier this week, Portugal’s foreign minister, during a visit to London, had hinted that the government was carefully considering recognition of Palestine. The ministry has now confirmed the decision, stating that acknowledging the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination is a necessary step.

The announcement comes ahead of the United Nations General Assembly session this month, where many countries are expected to formally declare their recognition of Palestine.

Until now, Portugal had maintained a cautious stance within the European Union, emphasising the need for a unified position. This latest development marks a significant shift in its approach.
