Punjab Assembly Approves Strict Law Against Underage Marriage

The Punjab Assembly has approved a strict law against underage marriage. Lawmakers passed the amendment bill with a clear majority. As a result, the new law aims to protect children and discourage early marriages across the province.

Meanwhile, Sarah Ahmed, Chairperson of the Child Protection Bureau, welcomed the move. She said the law reflects the vision of Maryam Nawaz. Furthermore, she described the legislation as a historic step toward protecting children’s rights.

The bill, titled the Punjab Child Marriage Restraint Bill 2026, introduces strict punishments. Parents or guardians who support underage marriages can face two to three years in prison. Moreover, they may also be fined up to 500,000 rupees.
