China develops coal-based battery that generates electricity without burning fuel

Scientists in China have developed a new experimental technology that could change the way electricity is produced from coal by eliminating the need to burn it.
Globally, coal is widely used for power generation because it is relatively cheap. However, burning coal releases large amounts of carbon dioxide, contributing significantly to air pollution and climate change.
To address this issue, researchers at Shenzhen University have created a battery-like device that converts the chemical energy stored in coal directly into electricity without combustion. This process prevents carbon dioxide emissions typically associated with traditional coal power plants.
The system, described as a coal fuel cell, works by processing coal through a series of electrochemical reactions inside the device. Instead of burning coal, the system breaks it down at a molecular level and converts its energy into electrical output.

According to the scientists, coal particles inside the cell undergo a complex transformation that allows energy to be extracted more efficiently. Unlike conventional methods, there is no need for high-temperature combustion, which is the main source of pollution and energy loss.
Researchers also claim that the system reduces energy waste that normally occurs during coal burning. In traditional power plants, a significant portion of energy is lost as heat, whereas this new method aims to convert more of the fuel’s energy into usable electricity.
However, the technology is still in the conceptual and experimental stage. Scientists have acknowledged that further research and development are required before it can be scaled for industrial or commercial use.
If successfully developed, this innovation could potentially offer a cleaner alternative for coal-based energy production and reduce environmental damage while still utilizing existing coal resources.
