Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced a major welfare initiative for mosque imams during the Punjab CM honorary imams’ ceremony in Lahore. She called religious scholars the backbone of society and vital partners in peace, unity, and governance. Honorary cards were distributed among ulema, and the chief minister warmly welcomed the participants.

Maryam Nawaz emphasized the public’s trust in mosque imams, stating that people instinctively turn to religious scholars for guidance during societal challenges. She said, “People say, bring the mosque imam and let him decide,” highlighting their influence in communities.

Acknowledging the struggles of imams, the CM noted that many survive on as little as Rs5,000 per month despite providing crucial religious and social services. She revealed that responses from nearly 70,000 mosque imams were received, underscoring the scale of engagement and need for support.

On the direction of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz announced a monthly stipend of Rs25,000 for mosque imams, starting from the end of February. Payments will be transferred directly through Bank of Punjab accounts to ensure transparency and eliminate intermediaries, she added.

The chief minister described the initiative as a gesture of respect for religious leadership. She stressed the role of ulema as partners in governance and reform, guiding both rulers and the public. She encouraged scholars to share their concerns freely with the government.

Maryam Nawaz condemned violence and sedition carried out in the name of religion, highlighting incidents that disrupted public order and endangered law enforcement personnel. She reaffirmed the state’s commitment to protect lives, maintain law and order, and deliver justice without exception.

Concluding her address, the CM urged religious scholars to support the government in promoting stability, social harmony, and peace across Punjab. She said that while the state cannot reach every corner, the voice of ulema does, making them essential partners in national welfare.
