Punjab CM power safety

LAHORE – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched practical measures to protect the province from accidents caused by hanging and disorganized electricity wires. These wires have previously led to short circuits, electrocution, and fires, raising safety concerns across the province.

The first phase of the master plan will focus on removing dangerous power lines in Lahore. The project aims to prevent accidents during events like Basant by targeting hazardous overhead wires in the inner city.

During the underground wiring operation, the chief minister instructed authorities to ensure alternative electricity supply. She emphasized that citizens should not face power outages while work is underway.

The government is reviewing a proposal to divide Lahore into three zones. Gradually, all power lines in these zones will be moved underground to increase safety.

A principal decision has been made to make underground wiring mandatory in new and existing housing schemes. A steering committee, including provincial ministers, LESCO officials, housing authorities, and administrative officers, will oversee the project.

Lesco officials briefed the government, stating that Lahore currently has around 40,000 kilometers of power lines and 50,000 kilometers of internet cables across the city. The chief minister stressed that this tangled network poses serious threats.

She further highlighted that the government aims to prevent tragedies similar to the Gul Plaza incident in Karachi. She added that power lines during rain cause accidents, and disorganized wires are both dangerous and unsightly.
