Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced a series of strict environmental measures to combat smog and pollution. A key decision was the province-wide ban on the production of petrol motorcycle rickshaws, as well as a phased move to end petrol motorcycle manufacturing. The government will also require all public departments to buy only electric and hybrid vehicles to reduce emissions and promote sustainable transportation.

In addition to these measures, the Punjab government has implemented a ban on washing vehicles with water at homes. This is part of a broader water conservation strategy aimed at reducing waste. The Cabinet Committee on Smog Control also approved the installation of modern, colored dustbins across the province to improve waste management. New regulations will punish the burning of plastics and other toxic materials, with no concessions for those harming public health or the environment.

To strengthen pollution control, the Punjab government has expanded its air quality monitoring network, with 41 stations now operational in 18 districts. They have also introduced an Air Quality Index (AQI) forecast system, enabling authorities to issue timely smog alerts. Punjab’s first emission testing system has already tested 300,000 vehicles, helping gather crucial data for smog control efforts. The government has also set up a monitoring room using CCTV cameras to oversee pollution sources, including industries and car washes.

Significant progress has been made in reducing crop burning, with an 88% decline in incidents in Lahore and surrounding areas. Drone surveillance and satellite tracking have been used to detect and address violations quickly. The province has also launched the country’s first Eco Chatbot, mobile apps, and a public dashboard for real-time environmental monitoring. Moreover, over 450 polluting industrial units have been demolished, and Rs 230 million in fines have been collected.

Punjab has launched a large-scale anti-plastic campaign, with over 26,000 businesses pledging to stop using harmful plastics. The government continues crackdowns on tire-burning sites, battery smelting operations, and illegal factories. Awareness campaigns in schools and universities aim to educate the youth about environmental protection. Punjab has also initiated extensive tree planting projects, including 2.1 million trees around Lahore. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed satisfaction with the progress and urged continued public cooperation for long-term environmental change.

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered a complete ban on commercial activities every Sunday as part of efforts to reduce smog and environmental pollution. The court issued the order while hearing a case related to air quality and pollution in the city on Tuesday. The bench emphasized the need for strict enforcement to tackle the growing pollution crisis.

The court also directed that wedding halls be closed by 10 PM, a move aimed at controlling pollution caused by late-night commercial activities. The Deputy Commissioner of Lahore, Musa Raza, appeared in court and submitted a notification regarding the closure of markets and restaurants at 10 PM. However, the bench insisted that issuing notifications alone was not enough, stressing the importance of strict enforcement.
