Saudi Arabia’s F-35 Purchase Moves Forward After Pentagon Approval

Saudi Arabia's F-35 Purchase

WASHINGTON: The Trump administration is reviewing a request from Saudi Arabia to purchase up to 48 F-35 fighter jets. The deal, potentially worth billions, has passed a critical Pentagon review ahead of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s visit. The F-35, the world’s most advanced fighter jet, would significantly enhance Saudi Arabia’s air force, which already includes a mix of Boeing F-15s and European aircraft.

This proposed sale could shift the military balance in the Middle East, raising concerns about Israel’s “qualitative military edge.” The U.S. policy ensures that Israel maintains superior military technology compared to its regional rivals. Israel has operated the F-35 for years, and its approval for other Middle Eastern nations to acquire the aircraft may test this longstanding policy.

Saudi Arabia, seeking to modernize its military and counter regional threats, particularly from Iran, has long expressed interest in the F-35. While the sale is still under review, it marks a key moment in U.S.-Saudi defense relations. The Pentagon has worked on the proposal for months, but final approval will require further steps, including Congressional notification and sign-off by President Trump.

The proposed sale has sparked political debate. Some members of Congress have voiced concerns, especially following the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The U.S. has previously scrutinized arms deals with Riyadh, which could complicate the approval process for the F-35 sale.

The deal aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader Vision 2030 plan to modernize its military and diversify defense partnerships. While the Biden administration previously considered offering the F-35 as part of a broader diplomatic effort with Israel, those talks have stalled. Despite challenges, the sale represents a significant step in the U.S.-Saudi defense relationship.
