Sindh to Punish Parents Rejecting Polio Vaccination

KARACHI: The Sindh government is considering tough penalties for parents refusing to vaccinate their children against polio. Officials said possible measures include blocking mobile SIMs and suspending ID cards and passports. These steps aim to push parents to fulfil their duty in the national polio eradication effort. Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said firm action is necessary to protect future generations.
Speaking on the issue, Murad Ali Shah stressed that vaccination is a national responsibility. He warned that those who ignore this duty will face restrictions on communication and travel. The government will enforce these penalties until parents comply. The move reflects growing frustration over rising vaccine refusals in key urban areas.
Meanwhile, Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi reviewed the ongoing anti-polio campaign in District South. He urged parents to cooperate during the nationwide drive scheduled from October 13 to 19. Naqvi confirmed that blocking mobile SIMs is under serious consideration. He also called for stronger public awareness efforts to tackle vaccine hesitancy.
The commissioner expressed concern over vaccine refusal in affluent areas like Defence and Clifton. Many families either avoid polio teams or do not open their doors. This lack of cooperation has left many children unvaccinated. Naqvi said such behavior is a major obstacle to achieving a polio-free Karachi.
To overcome these challenges, the city administration is working closely with the health department and global partners. Authorities are now intensifying efforts across Karachi to reach every household. Officials remain committed to eradicating polio, but say success depends on full public cooperation. More updates are expected as the campaign progresses.
