Texas flood tragedy: 27 Camp Mystic girls and staff amongst 85 confirmed dead

A sudden and deadly flash flood in Texas has claimed at least 85 lives, including 27 girls and staff members from the historic Camp Mystic.

According to international media, the Christian summer camp — located along the Guadalupe River — was struck early Friday morning by torrential rains that caused the river to rise 26 feet in just 45 minutes.

Viral videos show the young campers crossing a flooded bridge while singing hymns like Amazing Grace and Pass It On, moments before the tragedy struck.

Authorities confirmed 68 deaths occurred in the Hill Country region alone.

More rain is expected, and officials have warned of further flash flooding and urged residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.

Camp Mystic has hosted the daughters of Texas political elites for nearly a century. Former First Lady Laura Bush once served as an administrator at the camp, and the daughters of President Lyndon B. Johnson and Governor John Connally were also past participants.
