Imran Khan Toshakhana 2 case

A special court in Adiala Jail on Saturday sentenced Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to 17 years in prison each. Special Judge Central Shahrukh Arjumand presided over the hearing. The court handed Bushra Bibi a 10-year sentence under Section 409 and an additional seven years under Sections 5, 2, and 47. Similarly, Imran Khan received 10 years under Section 409 and seven more under the same sections. Both were also fined Rs16.4 million each, with a separate fine of Rs500 each.

The Toshakhana 2 case involves gifts the couple received from Saudi Arabia during Khan’s premiership from 2018 to 2022. According to rules, these gifts should have been submitted to the relevant government departments. However, the prosecution claimed Khan and Bibi used letters from deputy multi-secretaries to keep the gifts illegally. The gifts were valued at approximately €38 million, around Rs71.5 million. Undervaluation of these gifts caused a loss of Rs35.28 million to the national exchequer.

Among the gifts was a jewelry set given to Bushra Bibi during a May 2021 visit to Saudi Arabia. It included a ring, bracelet, necklace, and earrings. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed the case in August 2022 after a 37-day investigation. The couple was formally indicted in December 2024, and their pleas for acquittal were later rejected by a special Islamabad court.

This case is separate from the first Toshakhana case, in which the couple received a 14-year prison term. In that case, they were fined Rs1.57 billion collectively. The Islamabad High Court later suspended that sentence in April 2024. Together, these cases have drawn national attention and sparked debates on accountability and political ethics.

The court’s decision emphasizes strict enforcement of Toshakhana rules for public officials. Legal experts say the verdict could have long-term political and legal implications. The couple may appeal, but the sentences send a clear message on transparency and compliance in government affairs.

The Toshakhana Case-II entered its final phase as Imran Khan’s counsel completed cross-examination of the prosecution’s last witness. The hearing took place at Adiala Jail, where Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, appeared before the court. The judge provided both accused with documents containing 29 questions each. Defence lawyer Qausain Faisal Mufti thoroughly cross-examined NAB investigating officer Mohsin Haroon. This marked the completion of cross-examination for all 20 prosecution witnesses.

Next, both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi will respond to the charges against them. Special Judge Central Shah Rukh Arjumand adjourned the proceedings until Wednesday. The court is now preparing to hear the statements of the accused. This step will bring the case closer to its conclusion. The courtroom remained tense as the accused awaited their turn.
