US Iran Gulf attacks Strait of Hormuz crisis

Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated sharply on Monday as both sides carried out new attacks in the Gulf region, further destabilising an already fragile ceasefire and intensifying the struggle over control of the Strait of Hormuz.

According to reports, the renewed exchanges involved missiles and drone strikes, coming shortly after US President Donald Trump announced a new initiative aimed at clearing stranded commercial vessels through the strategically vital waterway. The operation, described by Trump as “Project Freedom,” was intended to restore shipping movement through the strait, which has been heavily disrupted since hostilities began earlier this year.

However, the situation deteriorated rapidly. Several merchant vessels reported explosions or fires while passing through Gulf waters. The US military claimed it destroyed six small Iranian naval boats, though Tehran denied the allegation. In response, Iranian missiles reportedly struck an oil facility in the United Arab Emirates, raising fears of wider regional spillover.

The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy choke points, has effectively remained under partial blockade conditions, with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard asserting control over passage permissions. The US Navy has also increased its presence in the region, further heightening tensions.

While Trump told Congress that the conflict had been “terminated,” his claim has been disputed by lawmakers who argue that legal authorisation for military action remains unresolved. Meanwhile, shipping companies have largely avoided the area, citing extreme risk and uncertainty.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the latest developments confirmed that there was no military solution to the crisis, adding that diplomatic talks were continuing with Pakistan playing a mediating role. He warned against further escalation, saying external interference could deepen the conflict.

Despite US claims that some merchant ships successfully transited the strait under naval escort, Iran denied any such crossings. Maritime agencies also reported damage to multiple vessels near UAE waters, though the exact cause remains under investigation.

The situation continues to evolve, with global shipping routes and regional stability hanging in the balance.
