Pakistan India water dispute

A leading US publication, The National Interest, has strongly backed Pakistan’s stance against India’s recent actions on the Indus Waters Treaty.

The journal warned that India’s suspension of the treaty could escalate tensions and instability in South Asia, affecting regional water security.

It highlighted India’s “Dulhasti Stage-II” project as a direct challenge to the treaty. The report said the project aims to use water strategically.

The publication cautioned that a water crisis could create a serious humanitarian threat in the region if disputes continue unchecked.

According to the report, India’s refusal to provide water-related data violates international law. The International Court of Justice prohibits unilateral suspension of the treaty.

The National Interest emphasized that the Indus Waters Treaty guarantees water security for Pakistan and remains a critical framework for regional cooperation.

The report concluded that India’s attempt to weaponize water is unacceptable. It urged adherence to international obligations to prevent further conflict.
