The Trump administration is working to assemble an international coalition aimed at restoring shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, as vessel traffic through the strategic waterway remains heavily disrupted amid ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran.

According to a report published by The Wall Street Journal, the US State Department has sent diplomatic cables instructing embassies to encourage foreign governments to join a proposed initiative named the “Maritime Freedom Construct.” The plan is designed to coordinate intelligence sharing, diplomatic engagement, and sanctions enforcement to help reopen the critical maritime route.

A senior US official reportedly confirmed the proposal, describing it as one of several diplomatic tools available to Washington. The initiative comes as shipping activity in the Strait continues to face significant delays and disruptions, raising concerns about global energy and trade stability.

Trump Signals Talks With Iran After Threatening War Resumption

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil transit routes, and any blockage or instability there has immediate global economic consequences. The report suggests that Washington’s push is aimed at securing broader international participation to ensure “freedom of navigation” in the region.

Tensions have escalated further as Iran has reportedly attempted to deter or disrupt shipping in the area, while the US has increased pressure through sanctions and maritime restrictions targeting vessels linked to Iranian ports.

Despite earlier claims by President Donald Trump that the strait was “completely open,” shipping activity remains limited. The situation has also become a central issue in stalled diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

Iranian officials have rejected US pressure, warning that continued restrictions could lead to confrontation. A senior Iranian military adviser said Tehran has alternative ways to bypass any blockade and would respond if necessary, further heightening regional uncertainty.
