The Pentagon has informed a congressional committee that the  has spent approximately $25 billion on the ongoing conflict with Iran, with most of the expenditure going toward weapons, while additional funds were used for maintenance and replacement of military equipment.

The briefing was given to the Armed Services Committee by a financial officer of the Department of Defense during testimony alongside US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth. Officials said the cost figures reflect the scale and intensity of the military engagement, which has significantly increased operational spending.

According to the briefing, the war-related expenditure has become a key point of discussion as the Trump administration has already requested a record $1.5 trillion defence budget for the year 2027. The proposed increase is being justified on the grounds of strengthening and restructuring the US defence industrial base.

Secretary Hegseth told the committee that the administration’s long-term objective is to transition the American defence system into what he described as a “wartime footing,” aiming to enhance production capacity, readiness, and rapid deployment capabilities.

The financial disclosure also included casualty figures, stating that 13 US military personnel have been killed so far in the conflict with Iran. Officials did not provide further operational details but indicated that military engagements have involved sustained deployments and high-cost weapons systems.

The rising expenditure has sparked renewed debate in Washington over defence spending priorities, especially as lawmakers assess the sustainability of large-scale military budgets alongside domestic economic pressures.

Analysts say the figures highlight the growing financial burden of prolonged overseas military operations and are likely to intensify scrutiny of future defence allocations in Congress. The proposed budget increase for 2027 is expected to face detailed review as policymakers weigh strategic needs against fiscal constraints.
