The Power Division spokesperson has clarified that no load management was carried out during peak hours on the night of April 29, stating that electricity supply remained stable across the country.

In an official statement, the spokesperson said that hydro-power generation stood at 6,000 megawatts during the previous day, while the country’s total hydro-power capacity is 11,500 megawatts. The statement added that improved availability of indigenous gas also contributed to increased electricity production from multiple power plants.

According to the Power Division, enhanced generation from hydro-power and additional gas-based production helped stabilise the national grid, particularly in the southern region. This resulted in improved transmission conditions and enabled an additional 100 megawatts of electricity to be brought online more efficiently. The spokesperson further noted that a total of 500 megawatts was successfully transmitted from the southern part of the country to the national grid.

The statement emphasised that while an “economic load management policy” is being implemented for high-loss feeders, it should not be confused with load management during peak demand hours. The policy, according to officials, is aimed at reducing system losses and improving efficiency in distribution, not restricting supply during high-consumption periods.

The Power Division also highlighted challenges in electricity generation due to the unavailability of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in global markets. It stated that around 4,700 megawatts of generation capacity remains inactive because of LNG shortages.

Despite these constraints, officials expressed optimism that improved LNG supply and increased water releases for hydro-power generation would help eliminate electricity shortfalls during night-time peak demand hours in the near future. The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring stable and uninterrupted power supply across the country.
