Cricket legend Wasim Akram has advised Pakistan and India to ignore political tensions and focus on enjoying the game. The two arch-rivals are set to meet in a high-stakes Asia Cup T20 match on Sunday in Dubai. This will be their first encounter since a military conflict earlier this year raised tensions between the nuclear neighbors. Despite calls for a boycott, India chose to play, marking the latest chapter in their long-standing cricket rivalry. Akram said both teams should enjoy the moment and play with discipline.
Akram stressed that cricket should unite, not divide, and players must stay focused on the sport, not external pressure. He said, “One team will win, one will lose—just enjoy the moment.” He reminded both players and fans that this is just a game. A full stadium of 25,000 spectators is expected in Dubai, making it one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament. Akram said such high-pressure moments are what make cricket thrilling for players and fans alike.
Drawing from his own experience, Akram recalled playing against India during tense political times. He led Pakistan’s tour to India in 1999 despite threats and was part of the 1987 tour during a near-war situation. He said he always enjoyed facing India and believes Indian players felt the same. Akram urged today’s players to focus on their performance and not let outside drama affect their mindset. According to him, pressure is part of the game and must be embraced, not feared.
Talking about Pakistan’s chances, Akram said the team should aim to win the entire Asia Cup, not just the India match. He noted that Pakistan is coming off a recent tri-series win against Afghanistan and the UAE. That success, he believes, should boost confidence. He warned that focusing only on beating India could hurt their overall campaign. Winning the tournament should be the ultimate goal, even if they lose a match along the way.
Lastly, Akram dismissed the idea of a one-sided match, even though India crushed UAE in just 4.3 overs earlier this week. He said Pakistan must stand up and fight hard, no matter the opponent. The legendary fast bowler believes this young Pakistan team has potential, but they must stay grounded and focused. His message was clear: respect the game, respect the moment, and look beyond just one rivalry.
