Bangladesh Cricket Faces Crisis as Players Boycott

Bangladesh cricket faced uncertainty on Thursday after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) issued a show-cause notice to director M Nazmul Islam. The notice cited “objectionable comments” he made publicly against national cricketers. The disciplinary move came just hours before scheduled Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) matches, escalating tensions between players and the board.
In response, the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) called for a nationwide boycott of all cricket activities. Players said they would continue the boycott unless Nazmul Islam resigns from his position. As a result, four Dhaka Cricket League first-division matches scheduled for Thursday morning were postponed. This action raised serious concerns about the day’s BPL fixtures.
Players from Chattogram Royals and Noakhali Express, who were due to feature in the first BPL match, joined the boycott. The toss for the opening match, scheduled for 12:30pm local time, faced uncertainty. Media and fans expressed concern over whether the match would proceed as planned.

The BCB confirmed it had initiated formal disciplinary proceedings against the director. The board requested a written response within 48 hours and said action would follow due process. Some board directors offered to remove Nazmul Islam from his role as finance committee chairman, but players rejected reassignment. They demanded full resignation instead of a simple role change.
CWAB leaders plan a press conference after the first BPL match’s scheduled start. They will formally present their demands to the BCB, including the director’s immediate resignation. The board’s handling of the crisis and player protests will likely affect Bangladesh cricket’s schedule and governance in the coming days.
