A bipartisan US Congress delegation visited Copenhagen on Friday. The lawmakers voiced strong support for Denmark and Greenland. They rejected President Donald Trump’s idea of acquiring Greenland. They said the plan lacks support from the American people.

The two-day visit came amid growing European support for Greenland. European countries launched a military reconnaissance mission to the Arctic island. Meanwhile, Trump warned he may impose tariffs on opposing countries. He claimed Greenland is vital for US national security.

The delegation met Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen. They also held talks with foreign and defence ministers. Additionally, they met parliament members and business leaders. These meetings aimed to strengthen diplomatic ties.

Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski called the talks productive and respectful. She stressed the importance of nurturing relations with allies. She said most Americans oppose acquiring Greenland. She added that Greenland should be treated as an ally, not an asset.

European leaders firmly rejected any US claim over Greenland. Denmark increased its military presence on the island. France and other European nations joined Arctic exercises. Consequently, demonstrations were planned to protest Trump’s territorial ambitions.
