Punjab on Thursday launched the country’s first Green Policing Unit. Authorities introduced electric patrol vehicles to curb fuel use and emissions.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif said, “Green policing reflects the vision of clean air and good governance.” She emphasized environmental benefits.
Sharif added that electric vehicles would reduce fuel costs and produce zero carbon emissions. She personally inspected and drove one of the vehicles.
Officials said the unit would initially operate in Lahore. Modern electric vehicles will be used for traffic patrolling across the city.

The electric vehicles, made by Chinese automaker BYD, have a driving range of 410 kilometers per charge. Fast charging takes about 30 minutes.
All vehicles are equipped with surveillance systems, public address tools, police lights, 360-degree cameras, and speed-detection technology for efficient patrolling.
Conventional patrol vehicles consume around 28,000 liters of fuel per month, costing Rs7.42 million. Each electric vehicle will save 4,500 liters annually. Authorities plan phased expansion across Punjab districts.
