ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the protection of water reservoirs as essential for Pakistan’s national interest, environment, and social welfare. He reaffirmed the country’s commitment to the fair and full implementation of the Indus Waters Treaty. On World Water Reserves Day, he highlighted the importance of sustainable conservation and effective management of water resources. He said the occasion reminds both Pakistan and the global community to prioritize water security.

The Prime Minister stressed that safeguarding water reserves is vital in the face of climate change. He said it ensures social well-being at individual and collective levels. Pakistan strongly supports full compliance with the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty under international law. He warned against any attempts to use water as a weapon, calling it a violation of global norms. He emphasized that fair water use is a matter of national and international responsibility.

Referring to this year’s theme, “Water Reserves and Traditional Knowledge: Preserving Cultural Heritage,” he highlighted water’s cultural and historical significance. He noted that Pakistan is also a signatory to the 1971 Convention on Wetlands, promoting sustainable use and conservation. The Prime Minister said reliable water reserves help tackle environmental and economic challenges, including droughts, floods, and climate extremes. He stressed that these resources are critical for national resilience and stability.

PM Shehbaz Sharif underscored that Pakistan’s water ecosystems, including lakes, glaciers, coastal areas, and mangroves, support biodiversity and climate resilience. He highlighted their socio-economic importance, noting that millions depend on these reserves for livelihoods. He warned that depletion could lead to job losses, rising food prices, and increased flood and drought risks. He urged collective action to conserve water as a national, social, and cultural asset.

Finally, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to advocating globally for fair, lawful, and peaceful water use. He stressed that protecting water resources is crucial for economic growth, environmental stability, and social welfare. He called on citizens, institutions, and international partners to work together for sustainable water management. Pakistan will continue to defend its rights under the Indus Waters Treaty while promoting global cooperation.
