A new autonomous transport service has been introduced inside the courtyard of Quba Mosque as part of efforts to improve mobility and enhance the visitor experience through advanced technology.

The self-driving vehicle, known as the “Robobus,” has been launched on a trial basis to facilitate the movement of worshippers and visitors within the mosque’s surrounding area. Officials say the initiative is aligned with Saudi Vision 2030, which focuses on digital transformation, smart infrastructure, and sustainable transportation solutions across the Kingdom.

According to project details, the Robobus operates using advanced artificial intelligence systems supported by high-resolution cameras and modern sensors. The technology enables the vehicle to navigate independently while maintaining high safety standards for pedestrians and passengers in crowded public spaces.

The autonomous shuttle is capable of transporting visitors along a 700-meter route within the mosque’s inner courtyard area without direct human intervention. Authorities say the pilot project aims to evaluate the efficiency, safety, and practicality of autonomous transport in religious and high-footfall locations.

The experimental phase of the service is expected to continue for 60 days, during which officials will monitor performance and gather operational feedback before deciding on possible expansion or permanent deployment.

The introduction of the Robobus reflects Saudi Arabia’s broader push toward integrating smart technologies into public services, particularly in areas receiving large numbers of visitors and pilgrims. The project is also intended to support environmentally friendly transportation and reduce congestion around key religious landmarks.

Visitors have shown strong interest in the futuristic service, with videos of the autonomous vehicle circulating widely on social media platforms. The initiative is being viewed as another step in the Kingdom’s efforts to modernize infrastructure while improving convenience and accessibility for worshippers.
